UN summit on climate change

The attempted kick start for Copenhagen.

Live webcast here. The UN’s media attempts are a lot less clunkety than they used to be. Still, it’s sure to cut out about the time someone interesting starts to speak. That would be Wangari Maathai.

Program of speakers

All public talk of course. Lots of pretty-pretty, except maybe Maathai. The real fireworks will be in the concurrent sessions, closed to the world.

Letter from Gabriel Wahab of Pakistan, aged 17:

Great leaders are made by actions, not words. I know you all as leaders have the potential to be great. So why have you done nothing to help in the efforts to combat Climate Change?

We are not asking you to start or even create ways to fight Climate Change. People everywhere, especially youth, are taking action. All we need you to do is support us. And if you canʼt agree to take action that will ensure I have a world to live in tomorrow, at least took me in the eyes and explain why?

God fucking forbid dkos could cover a climate conference that has more heads of state in attendance than Bali.

God forbid the media can cover anything except what Obama had to say. He said precisely nothing, the least of anyone I have heard. Arias was better. Fuck, even Sarko was better.

President Nasheed at the London premiere of The Age of Stupid:

    Don’t be stupid

Obama – A bunch of stuff everyone already knows.

Sounds like another campaign speech – JFK, we’re building this, increasing fuel economy, etc. If he starts that fired up shit I’m gonna hurl.

Praising the lame ass ACES bill.

This is a whole big bunch a nothing. I could hear these motivational speeches at any airport hotel.

    Pretty tepid respnse. Yuck.

Pres Nasheed of Maldives is up. “Deep down, we know you’re not really listening.”

    -Everyone must jump first

    -Maldives carbon neutral by 2020

-Copenhagen cannot be a suicide pact.

All in all, a strong 350/1.5 degree statement. Bravo.

ACES is that bullshit cap and trade legislation isn’t it?

In case you didn’t see this at the squid blog, I thought you might enjoy this little video:

        Pretty well covers it.

The argument is “well once we have something we can fix it.”

A bunch of contracts flying around enriches some brokers on Wall St, Zurich, wherever, but at the end of the day are there fewer emissions. Plus collateral damage. See the Carbon Connection. World Bank still contorting itself into hoops to finance coal plants, destructive hydro, aluminum smelters with those carbon credits. A tax would be better.

Need to find text of Kagame’s statement today.

Group of young people present a frontal attack. You know what to do, DO IT. Ends TIME IS UP! Probably best speakers of the day.

Next up: Ban Ki-Moon, Rajendra Pachauri, then Obama. Hope to stick around long enough to hear him compromise, trigger, postpone.

Djimon Hounsou tries to convey a sense of urgency with a multimedia presentation. Now he’s reading from Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot. It really is too bad no one will see this.
